Coach Mark Hreben has spent many years giving back to our youth. He has coached both basketball and baseball and made a positive impact on countless kids and families in our community.

Mark is also a husband, a father, and a friend to many. And right now, he is in Boston fighting for his health and waiting for a lung transplant.

Let’s go for a fun fact

Long before refrigerators, ice from the Kennebec River was big business!

Each winter, workers cut enormous blocks of ice from the frozen river, packed them in sawdust and stored them in huge icehouses along the Kennebec. The ice was then loaded onto ships and sent as far away as Cuba, the West Indies and Central America!

At its height, Maine's ice industry employed thousands of workers, and around one million tons of ice could be exported in a year.

So… I guess you could say the people in the Caribbean once cooled their drinks with Kennebec River ice.

This one is worth the drive! Tumbledown Mountain delivers everything you want in a Maine hike—rugged mountain scenery, sweeping views and, best of all, a beautiful alpine pond tucked high in the mountains.

For a bigger adventure, experienced hikers can tackle the 5.5-mile Loop Trail route, which adds steep climbing, scrambling and spectacular open ridgeline views.

Few Maine hikes give you the experience of climbing a mountain and arriving at a gorgeous pond near the top. Pack a lunch and make a day of it!

Sept. 14–20 — Find the Center of Our Galaxy!
About an hour after sunset, look south for the Moon and reddish Antares. Nearby is the “Teapot” shape of Sagittarius. From a truly dark location, look above the Teapot's spout for a hazy band of light — you're looking toward the center of our Milky Way galaxy!

Sept. 18 — Venus at Peak Brilliance
Look west shortly after sunset. Venus reaches its brightest point of its current evening appearance, outshining every star in the sky.
