KENNEBEC CHEESERY, SIDNEY

Kennebec Cheesery at Koons Farm is located on 100+ acres overlooking Messalonskee Lake in Sidney, Maine. The property has been farmed since 1792 and the original farmhouse is still in use. Our cheesery was completed and licensed in 2008 with the help of family, friends and a Farms for the Future grant. In addition to selling hand-crafted cheeses and yoghurt the farm sells lamb when available. Our herd of around 60 dairy goats and about two dozen Katahdin sheep graze on the 30 acres of pasture and hay fields.

LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO FALL FISH? TRY FLYING POND IN VIENNA

Lake Trout and Coldwater Fishing
Another great opportunity in the region is Sheepscot Lake in Palermo. The lake provides deep, well-oxygenated water that supports a diverse fish community of more than 20 species, including Lake Trout (Togue), Brook Trout, and Smallmouth Bass. The combination of deep water and suitable habitat makes Sheepscot Lake an interesting destination for anglers looking to target Togue during September.

One common way to target Togue on Sheepscot Lake is by trolling. Downriggers or lead-core line can be used to present lures at the depth where this species is usually held. During this time of year, the thermocline (or just below it) can be an important area to target, with the thermocline sitting at approximately 25 feet. Copper or silver trolling spoons can be effective when targeting Togue with this method. Conditions can change quickly in September, anglers should be prepared to adjust their trolling depth and presentation. Water temperature, weather, forage, and time of day can all influence where fish are located. Paying attention to these factors can make the difference between simply putting a line in the water and actively finding fish.
