ICE FISHING

Spring fishing can be some of the best fishing. Maine’s fisheries biologists have compiled their notes from the field:
Late ice can mean hot fishing - trout, salmon, bass, and other warm water species often become more active as daylight increases
Cusk season is here - for extra attraction, let a bag of dead shiners sit out all day - the stronger scent makes them irresistible
Harvest helps - several waters statewide are encouraged to harvest smaller lake trout or salmon to improve growth
Think shallow as sunlight increases - increased sunlight can draw rainbow trout and warm water species to the shorelines and weed beds.
Stay mobile - if traps aren’t producing, change depths/locations.
Plan ahead for bait.
