LOOK UP! SKY HAPPENINGS
Twin Meteor Showers (Now through August 1)
The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids are both active, with the brightest meteors visible after midnight into the early morning hours. While this week's nearly full moon will wash out many of the fainter meteors, keep an eye out for the Alpha Capricornids' spectacular bright fireballs streaking across the sky.
The Milky Way Is at Its Best
If you head away from town lights, you'll have one of the year's best opportunities to see the glowing band of the Milky Way stretching across the southern sky. This is peak season for viewing our home galaxy.
August 12–13
The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks in just two weeks, and 2026 is shaping up to be one of the best Perseid displays in years. Thanks to a new moon, skies will be exceptionally dark, making it possible to see 50–100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions
The next full moon, the Sturgeon Moon, rises on August 28, followed by a partial lunar eclipse visible from North America that same night.
