BISTRO MILLARD - HALLOWELL

As much as I frequent establishments in Hallowell, I have overlooked what appears to be a wonderful little gem called Bistro Millard located at 167 Water St. This is not your average eating establishment. They are rooted in keeping dining intimate, slow, and conversational. This is inspired by the European dining experience. Wine, laughs, fresh food and enjoying each other’s company. I can’t wait to try it out! https://www.bistromilliard.com/about

NEARLY 900 WATERS STILL OPEN TO FALL FISHING!

Nearly 900 lakes and streams remain open to fishing this fall.

Many waters close to fishing on October 1, and special regulations apply during fall spawning seasons. But hundreds of lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds remain open. Here are a few places closer by to cast a line this month:

  • Belgrade Lakes Region: Try for a catch-of-a-lifetime brown trout, along with opportunities for bass and rainbow trout.

  • Rangeley Lakes Region: Take a hike to remote fishing spots and enjoy exceptional fall foliage along the way.

  • Moosehead Lake Region: Find trout ponds open into November and river fishing opportunities. A little cast and blast adventure, anyone?

  • Penobscot Region: Enjoy brook trout fishing with spectacular views of Mount Katahdin.

Before you head out, check the Special Fishing Laws. The Fall Fishing column indicates whether a water is open, but some waters may be open only in specific sections or during limited time frames. Always read the regulations carefully to make sure your chosen water is open to fishing. Source: Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife

BLAINE HOUSE SCULPTURE UNVEILED

Created by Maine artist Patrick Plourde

The large-scale sculpture transforms reclaimed hand tools, including shovels once used by farmers, builders and communities, into two monumental pinecones, representing the Maine state flower. The artwork connects Maine’s natural landscape with generations of labor, ingenuity and resourcefulness. https://www.penbaypilot.com/article/pinecone-pair-tassel-sculpture-unveiled-blaine-house/275522

LOOK UP! SKY HAPPENINGS

Orionid Meteor Shower — October 21–22

The biggest sky event of the next two weeks! Debris from Halley's Comet produces fast, bright shooting stars. Under ideal conditions, the shower can produce 10–20 meteors per hour, although moonlight will reduce visibility this year.

Best viewing: After midnight until dawn, especially once the Moon sets.

Hunter's Moon — October 25–26

October's full moon peaks just after midnight on October 26 in Maine. Look for it rising around sunset on October 25 for a beautiful autumn sight.

🪐 Saturn in the evening sky

Saturn remains a good October viewing target. Look for it after dark; binoculars can help locate it, but you'll need a telescope to appreciate its rings.
